2008 games

First up for 2008 is a slightly disorganised (us??) evening on the 2nd where some of you have games arranged and some don't - if you don't, bring a game.

See you on Wednesday....

Final 2007 meeting

Well where were you, eh? Hmph.

Still - Chris, Bookmark and The Committee had a few drinks and a chat. And got few text messages. Brett - if you were playing Dude on the 2nd, you're now not - child'd birthday or some such poor excuse.

The Beach is shut on Boxing Day evening, much to Bradley's dismay. That just leaves next year's order of business as decided by a slightly pissed committee (Mick and Bradley weren't, I was).

After the show spending embargo is over, the club's next period will be the 1902 Islamic uprising on Mars. Mars (having two crescent moons) has always been coverted by Islamic figures, and the 1902 uprising represents excellent wargaming potential. The figures for this scale of planet sweeping conquest are 8.5mm, an excellent compromise between scale and detail. Rules need to be as flexible as possible so we have settled on Hordes of the Things as the only detailed set of proper wargaming rules up to the job.

So - pick a faction and get painting! Any questions let Mick know.

Happy Christmas/Soltice/yule everyone - see you Jan 2nd.

Games for July 11th

This week we had a new member... who has no email. No gossiping.

Next week the 40K league and practice for the WFB league - 1500 points I assume?

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Smoke free gaming arrives...

Nice to see Alan at the club... and we fought to a bitter bloody draw in the MexAm. Next week we have 4 players doing BFG and the rest doing WW2, it seems...

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Games for the last smokey day...

You see, I hate playing horse and musket, just can't get the hang of it...

Next week we have MexAm for Brett, Dave, JDE and Alan; 40K for Mark and... Mark; Robin babysitting them whilst playing an "out of spire" Necromunda game; and the rest of you can play whatever the USS Bradley arrives with.

Friday, June 15, 2007

This is for Brett ... lovely lovely uniforms

Note the epaulettes and perfectly coiffured cravats. We on the other hand were slightly less groomed. Bandys ... what can you do with them?

D Day 6 June 2007

Wading ashore onto Gold Beach from the Landing Craft. Note the weather and sky and then compare to photographs of 1944. This is the enduring memory I will have having followed in the footsteps of the chaps who did it back then. The old guys are on the beach waiting for us ... a friendlier reception than occured in 1944.

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

... oh the shame, part 2...

To think he used be a "proper" wargamer. He liked lines, and columns, and men in pink or grey. History, dammit, none of this silly stuff, it's not proper wargaming.

Certainly not with Hobbits.

Excuse the lack of focus; even my camera couldn't quite believe it.

Off the beach, back in the Beach

Now our intrepid bootnecks have returned from Utah Beach and their hard work abroad; back to the toys. Next week we have FPW; WFB; and GASLIGHT. Maybe something else as Mark L and Tom have nothing to play... but we'll sort that cos we're clever.

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Major Fielder discusses logistics with the QM:

"All I did was have a couple of beers and then my boots fell apart - honest!"

Saturday, June 09, 2007

Major General Von Tourism-Adams

Our tour guides gobs off about knowing all the facts and figures surrounding Pegasus Bridge and the Coup de Main.

He even made his own tent. Not bad for a "Bandy".

... and we found a bridge. Apparently famous for something.

Royal Marines Tanks

... and yes the Royal Marines did have its own Panzer Corps. Here we see a Centuar armed with a 95mm close assault gun. Quite handy.

D-Day 6th June 2007

63 years on from the original invasion two intrepid bootnecks from Exmouth Wargames Club set sail along with other Royal Marines from the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines. It was fun, wet, tiring and inspiring. Here are a few phots. CSgt Phil Adams endeavours to remain cool in a sea state 4 on a flat bottomed Landing Craft ...

... Major Dave Fielder meanwhile coolly cross-decks from an LCU to an LCVP (a big one to a small one!). Then we bob around for a bit more and look at the Mulberry Harbours.

We wade ashore to be greated by veterans, French and Rum - huzzah!

Friday, June 08, 2007

Wot we done on D-Day ...

... and so our holiday snaps begin ...

Sunday, June 03, 2007

Final alternative ...

Or if you really prefer something a bit more 40k or Fantasy ...

Another location?

What about this piece of terrain for 6th June? It comes with its own artillery.

6th June ... alternative location

No room at the Beach on 6th June?
Then try UTAH Beach. With room to manoeuvre any number of troops at any scale. Note the lifelike chaos familiar in the image at 180mm scale.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Right then - there is no club on June 6th, as they have a paying customer. I would point out this the ideal evening for us to pop up to Ryga's in Exeter.... see the link on the blog.

In theory, on the 13th, we have 40K - Robin, Phil, Mark and Mark; LOTR with me and Brett and Andy G if he feels like it, and Dave and Bradley were playing something. But watch the list.

Last games in May

Oh how I love 40K. Lets play it more often, it's great.

Now that's out of my system, next week we have 40K, AVP, Nappies, and Rapid Fire - no doubt featuring British Paras with Rending and Initiative 12. :-)

And a reminder about this.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

... this is bad ...

He has changed. It used to 1/72nd plastic Napoleonics, unbased, old style, columns, lines and squares. Now its 40k, Codexes, uber-armies, characters and weird stuff. The end of a glorious military career?

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Every dog has his day

Depsite our dogged defence, crying havoc and letting slip the dogs of war, the sons of bitches on the other side sent the Argentinian mastiff, sorry massiv, home licking their... wounds. Why are we persisting with these dog tired old jokes? It's a bit paw. Ask Trainset - he has a shaggy dog story for you all.

Next week we have the start of the 40K competition, if even, otherwise recoil if odd - which we are. Hang on, I'm talking like Phil Barker. ;-)

Also Napoleonic. Which I can't squeeze a dog joke out of. Hey Ho.

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Belated games post

Games for this week... ACW, Aeronef, and shockingly 40K, which isn't C19th at all...

Friday, May 11, 2007

An unashamed piece of Royal Marines history with the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands occuring this year. Per Mare Per Terram.

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Games for May 9th

We will be playing 40K, 40K, and Mexican American.

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

WH 40K 9
Napoleonic 8
WW2 3
Others 3
Martian Empires 3
Epic 2
Mordheim 1
Worms 1
Dba 1
Mexican American War 1

Horse & Musket 1
Modern 1

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Next games

Next week we have two player games of Hordes of the Things (possibly 4); Necromunda; costume drama; and something else...
And Zombies?

Friday, April 20, 2007

Nazi Indian Chariots

This wasn't much fun either! Celtic cavalry bravely making use of the Fire and Flee rule, only to be caught by a bunch of facist Indians! That'll learn me for using 2d6 rather than 3 d6.

How to beat Elephants ...

... just start dropping masonry on them.

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

What we're doing after Salute

So... following the fall of the Roman empire and Western Europe in one evening...

Next week we have WH40K; maybe MexAm or Napoleonic; and Epic. I think.

Or pool.

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Another week older

Right then.. 1 game of Napoleonics, 1 game of WW2, and 3, count em, 3 exciting and entertaining games of GASLIGHT later... The 1st Horsell Foot & Tripod acquitted themselves poorly again.

Next week - 40K, maybe more 40K, Modern micro armour, and... EPIC.

Week after - maybe more 40K. And Warhammer Quest returns...

Friday, April 06, 2007

Games for April 11th

We have GASLIGHT; Napoleonics; possibly 40K.... and something else??

Themed Easter Army (sort of)

I know it's the Easter Holidays, but this is worth sharing. James has a lovely little Snow Man HotT Army, perfect for those Easter Bunny's to fight against. Has anyone got any bunnies?

Mummy Kills?

"Did someone say that mummy kills?"

Saturday, March 31, 2007

British Army's New Unisex Boot

Advance extract from Sunday Times - 1st April 2007
... Due to female soldiers now serving on the front line, British Land Forces have introduced a new style boot to ensure that the girls can retain some feminine traits. These boots have been well received, and even some male colleagues have trialled these boots. A recent quote indicated "that this is a major step foward in boot design. The Army has waited over 300 years for such a significant development". Some parallels to boot design adopted during the English Civil War have been made, but even Prince Rupert never envisaged such a radical improvement ...

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

April 4th games

Right, now I've put Brett off Mordheim for life...

Next week - JDE/Brett/Mark/Robin - Martian Empires
Mick/Dave/Bradley - Something new.
The others - Form a square, Mr Darcy.

... Giving up smoking ...

It wasn't a good day for the CO of 1 Para to give up smoking.

Monday, March 26, 2007

ACW - Unions attacking?

In this game, Brett said that the Unions had to attack (look left). However, being a Rebel he didn't
read the rules and then simply came over the wall towards the Unions (right) ... carnage! Lucky I had the Irish Brigade to beat off them smelly Rebs.

Ensuring victory ...

Right. Well this one is "How to win in Iraq". Quite simply outnumber the enemy with superior firepower, armour and numbers and hey presto - one times succesful invasion. Seems to work quite well. Might need to consider a long term political solution prior to the war though ...

Mexican-American War Hoopla

This war is all about throwing hoops over each other. If you look close enough you can see that both sides have managed to get a few hits on each other. The winners will be awarded a goldfish at the end of the evening. The US forces have a slight edge over the Mexicans, but its all to play for ...

It's James's fault ...

... well he gave me access by giving me the password, so here I am. Blogging along about nothing in particular. Wargames. That's what I'll talk about. Played quite a few now and painted some figures, some good, some bad and some really ugly. However, they are all loved - apart from the ones I didn't like and subsequently ebay'd. That's the thing with gamers, we can be really fickle. Like a butterfly, floating from one project to the next and never finishing any. Anyway, wargamers die as soon as they finish all their painting. That means I'm immortal. Great, so I'll be doing this blog thing for quite a while. See ya'll later.

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Games for the 28th March

OK... Next week's entertainment appears to be as follows -

Napoleonic, Warmaster, AT-43, and probably Mordheim...

Other business? Not really... no..

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Games for 21.2.07

So - glossing over the fact that I beat Bradley at Epic, next week we have...

JDE - 1520ish Aztecs/Spanish, DBA or HotT
Dave/Bradley - something tba
Brett, Phil, et al; Napoleonic
Mick/Robin - something historical. And wriggly.

Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Games for the 14th March

Next week on the 14th, I'll be playing Bradley at Speckled Epic; other games include ACW (Dave, bring the union!), Napoleonic and 40K.

Following week I'm playing DBA, or the like, in about 1520ish...

Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Games for Feb 28th

Good games tonight in preparation for Legionary... in 9 days!

For the 28th - JDE, Brett, Tony W and Robin playing WH40K; Bradley and Andy G playing WFB; everyone else playing Napoleonics.

And the show's on the 3rd!

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Games for lovers and fighters

From Dave "I must do something with the blog sometime" Fielder...

Wed 14th Feb - The "Love" game for singles and those who have arranged not to be bashed up by partners will be a large V&B FPW. We will use as many tables as we can shoe horn together so start stretching those arms.

Wed 21st Feb - 2 x WHFB 7th Ed - Brad, Trainset, Brett, Andy(?). One other game TBC next week, probably Rapid Fire or something else with one brain cell.

[I think you'll find a game of Martian Empires with Mick, JDE and possibly Robin as well -JDE]

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Games for 7th and 14th Febuary

Another Martian victory... hey ho...

Next week - WFB for Tom, 40K for Greg, something yet to be decided for JDE and Robin; and Nappies for the rest. Napoleonics, of course.

The following week is Valentines Day - so most us will be elsewhere; the club will continue in the absence of the romantics of course. Probably Epic 40K.

And this Saturday it's the Plymouth show - see the link to the right!

Friday, January 26, 2007

Probable games for 31.1.7

I'm informed this is what's on next week..

Volley and Bayonet - Dave and the dreggs
Warhammer 7th Edn - Brad and Trainset
Branscombe Beach Scenario - "Get the loot before the Grockels" - Mick [Anyone but ick, I'd assume this was a joke..]
Martian Empires - JDE and others

Friday, January 19, 2007

Games for January 24th

Will include Martian Empires; Star Wars fighters; and something else.. WW2??

I forget...

Thursday, January 11, 2007

Games for January 17th

According to Dave - "Next week I am indeed doing something French ... and Austrian and Italian from 1859. Myself, Phil, Brad and Mark 2 (although he doesn't know yet) will be doing a new rule set - hence the small group size. If they are good rules then I will do something more for the club. It is really an excuse for me to run a trial game for WJ and an article I am writing.

40k in 40 minutes for everyone else I think. Bring an army, a rule book and a stack of arguments. Should be fun."

Monday, January 08, 2007

January 10th

As Dave puts it - "Start of the New Year, ACW game from Dave and Bradley (Rebs)managed to achieve operational brilliance, get almost all his Confederate forces into contact in turn one and then watch them all run away like school girls. Phil (Union) tried hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but was stopped by the umpire from opening fire on his own troops - they were Americans after all, and it wouldn't be right not to have a real Blue on Blue incident. Well done the band.

John Wayne must have performed well in the Mexican-American game ... the usual guffaws were heard from those damned noisy historical gamers. "A last request gringo? Guess I'll just finish my Texan Bar, just bite throught the chocolate and chew - real slow".

Time for some serious fantasy next week with:
750 pt Border patrols - Dave, Brett, Andy and Trainset(?)
Star Wars - Mick, Mark Two, Phil and some others?
Martian Empires - James and Brad, lucky boys.

Thanks for the last two game managers who apparently volunteered whilst AWOL tonight!
